Mission Builders of the ELCA
In the spirit of celebrating God’s work, Our hands, have you considered volunteering for a mission trip here in the US. Mission Builders as explained below is looking for volunteers. In the past we have provided men’s/women’s and youth group work opportunities across the US.
Mission Builders of the ELCA is a mission outreach ministry of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The Mission Builder Program helps established ELCA congregations, camps, and institutions that are willing to undertake the responsibility for the construction of their own facilities, to save money on their structures. This program is specific to individuals and couples wishing to be involved in Christian service on these types of projects, and on occasion as management supervisors of other volunteers doing disaster response work. Spouses are welcome to participate as construction workers, or to become involved in congregational or local volunteer outreach activities. While primarily Lutheran, this is an “interdenominational group”. Projects in the past have ranged from $150K- $4.5 million, most structures take from three to four months to “dry in,” usually beginning June and typically are completed before October 1st. During this time, new project volunteers capable of demanding physical construction activities are welcome to come and work for a period as little as one week or longer. Participant’s who work shorter periods of time of less than two weeks will be onsite on a volunteer basis, and receive no remuneration, other than a full RV hook up, and in some locations lodging in the community. Participants will be required to sign a waiver, of liability for the organization for whom the building is being constructed. After two weeks individuals, deemed capable of doing this demanding physical labor may become paid employees of the church, camp, or social ministry for whom the structure is being constructed and will receive the states prevailing minimum wage and coverage by Workman’s Compensation. We typically work 40 hours per week, (Tuesday- Saturday).
In situations where a Mission Builder or volunteer may be working near children or youth, the organization may require a background check.
