SUMMARY:Immigration Law Training
DESCRIPTION:The Mennonite Central Committee (MCC)\, in collaboration with World Relief\, is offering an intensive five-day Immigration Law training March 30 (all day) through April 3 (all day)\, 2020. The training is being held at the MCC Welcoming Place\, Akron\, PA.  The training will be conducted using the curriculum of the Immigrant Legal Resource Center (ILRC). This course will help to provide the necessary training component for individuals who wish to apply for accreditation from the Department of Justice (DOJ – formerly known as BIA recognition and accreditation). DOJ recognition and accreditation allows non-attorneys working at non-profit organizations to practice immigration law. The course will touch on all areas of immigration law and practice focusing on topics most relevant to those serving and representing low-income immigrants.  Due to the requirements of the recognition and accreditation application process\, we recommend that only individuals with U.S. citizenship\, lawful permanent residence\, or other long-term immigration status apply for this training.  Additional requirements for applying for Department of Justice (DOJ) recognition and accreditation will be discussed during the training week.  Learn more and register:  https://mcc.org/get-involved/events/immigration-law-training

This Congregational Heritage Workshop will be a day of educational sessions on keeping archives\, planning major anniversaries\, writing meaningful history\, and much more. SUMMARY:Camp Mount Luther Helped by Raise the Region
DESCRIPTION:Camp Mount Luther is participating in “Raise the Region” on March 11-12\, 2020.  The event\, coordinated by The First Community Foundation Partnership of Pennsylvania\, helps the community support local nonprofit organizations’ fundraising efforts.  FCFP\, in partnership with Blaise Alexander Family Dealerships\, will be launching the 30-hour fundraising event starting at 6:00 p.m. on March 11 and ending at 11:59 p.m. on March 12.  Blaise Alexander Family Dealerships has donated money that will be used to stretch a portion of donations made to pre-registered nonprofits.  Additional monetary prizes and incentives will be awarded throughout the entire event.  This program is designed to help organizations\, like Camp Mount Luther\, kickoff 2020 fundraising campaigns and increase donor bases.  Proceeds from this event will go to camp’s Annual Fund\, unless a donor gets in touch with the camp office to designate it for another camp cause.  How It Works:   \n\nOn March 11 and 12\, donors will visit raisetheregion.orgfrom a computer\, smart phone\, iPad\, etc. to learn more about the nonprofits participating and how their work is impacting our community.\nYou can then make an online donation to support one or more of those nonprofit organizations on the Raise the Region website. Running totals will be shown throughout the day at the Raise the Region website.\nAt the end of the donation period\, a pro-rated match per gift will be determined and the Community Foundation will send checks to all participating nonprofits with the amount raised\, the pro-rated match\, and any EXTRA money from prizes awarded throughout the day.\n\nCamp Mount Luther has participated in Raise the Region for seven years and has garnered about $100\,000 in donations during this event. DESCRIPTION:The Upper Susquehanna Synod Council has designated that Transfiguration Sunday each year be recognized as “Mount Luther Sunday” to help promote outdoor ministries in the synod. Members of USS congregations are encouraged to celebrate outdoor ministries on this day\, February 23\, 2020. Mount Luther is an extension of the ministry that is done in local Lutheran congregations. The camp asks that congregations promote the camp on that Sunday or designate another Sunday this spring to do so. Ways to promote the camp include bulletin inserts to share with congregation members\, Temple Talks\, camper testimonials\, bulletin board displays\, special camp music during Sunday school and church services\, as well as special offering being collected. SUMMARY:GROW in the Snow

DESCRIPTION:WV-WMD is offering an event this February\, titled\, “Sharing the Gospel in the ‘Age of the Spirit\,'” with The Rev. Dr. Cheryl Peterson.  It will will be held February 4-5 at Mary Help of Christians in Huttonsville\, WV.  Peterson serves as Professor of Theology and also as Associate Dean for Academics\, Trinity Lutheran Seminary\, Capitol University. She also serves on the International Lutheran-Pentecostal Dialogue. Peterson will bring both her expertise as a scholar and an ecumenist to explore a range of pneumatological issues\, including Charismaticism and Pentecostalism.  Peterson’s proposed outlines includes: \n\nLiving as Lutherans in the “Age of the Spirit” in a time of “religious decline”\nWhat Lutherans can learn from the rise of the “Spiritual\, but not religious”\nWhat Lutherans can learn from the rise of Pentecostalism and charismatic movements\nNew directions for Lutheran pneumatology\, ecclesiology\, and mission\n\nThere is also a boundaries training pre-event. DESCRIPTION:A program called “Solidarity Not Solitary” is scheduled for Sunday\, January 12\, 2020\, from 1:00-3:00 p.m. at St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Harrisburg. In this program\, important information on the use of solitary confinement will be shared.  The program will engage participants in experiential learning and have formerly incarcerated persons tell their stories about their personal experiences with spending time in solitary. It was into a world of pain\, hurt and confusion that God came\, in the form and nature of Jesus Christ\, so many years ago and God’s everlasting peace and comforting presence remains with us still. DESCRIPTION:“Spirited Generosity: Offering Vitality in the 21st Century” will be held November 20-21\, 2019.  It will be live-streamed at the Upper Susquehanna Synod Office from the conference in Atlanta\, GA.  This event is for anyone\, not just clergy! \n  \nReceiving offerings has been an ongoing part of the church’s story\, beginning with the earliest scripture texts. Spirited Generosity: Offering Vitality in the 21st Century will explore the history and theology of the offering\, its spiritual significance\, and how faith communities can continue to make congregational giving a vital practice in 21st-century culture.   Some of the questions that will be addressed include: \n\nWhat changes have you noticed in your offerings?\nHow is the role of offering evolving in worship?\nWhat new practices can bring vitality to your offerings?\n\nThe event will feature these four plenary sessions and leaders: \n\nDr. L. SUMMARY:Luther Rose Lecture
DESCRIPTION:The 2019 Luther Rose Lecture\, “Moving Forward in Faith” will be held in November.  The fifth anniversary of the Luther Rose Lectures welcomes keynote speaker Rev. Dr. Philip D. W. Krey.  He is a renowned speaker with a special history in the interpretation and spirituality of the Bible in the early and medieval church\, including the Reformation.  Each of the two lectures will focus on historical grounding as well as contemporary relevance.  The event will be Sunday\, November 3\, 2019\, from 2:00-4:30 p.m. at Palm Lutheran Church\, Palmyra.  The event is free and all are welcome.  Registering prior to the event helps the committee plan appropriate for refreshments\, seating\, and name tags.  Register at PalmLutheran.org/Events/Luther-Rose-Lectures.

SUMMARY:Fall Women’s Retreat
DESCRIPTION:All local women are invited to be participants at the Fall Women’s Retreat sponsored by Camp Mount Luther and the Upper Susquehanna Synodical Women’s Organization.  The day-long retreat will feature a presentation led by Rev. Sarah Hershberger titled\, “We All Are One in Mission.”  The retreat will take place at the camp on Saturday\, November 2\, 2019.  It will run from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The day will begin with refreshments.   The cost of $20.00 per person includes coffee and tea\, snacks\, lunch\, and the program. SUMMARY:Evening at Shade Mountain to Benefit Mount Luther
DESCRIPTION:Come to Shade Mountain Winery to share fellowship\, entertainment\, and enjoy locally produced wine\, all to benefit Camp Mount Luther.  The event runs from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.  Entertainment will be provided by KJ Reimensnyder-Wagner\, a local musician who sings folk music.  The menu will include heavy appetizers\, dessert\, and one glass of wine per person.  SPACE IS LIMITED.  Please make your reservations with the camp office at 570-922-1587 or cml@campmountluther.org. SUMMARY:Church Women United’s World Community Day
DESCRIPTION:Church Women United’s World Community Day service will be held Friday\, November 1\, 2019\, at Pine Street United Methodist Church\, 441 Pine Street\, Williamsport at 1:30 in the afternoon.  The theme is The Time is Now! “Resolve to Love.”  The scripture is Colossians 3:14. World Community Day 2019 focuses on global peace and justice.  As women of faith we have a responsibility to reach beyond Christian denominations to brothers and sisters who are Muslim\, Buddhist\, Jewish and many others.  It is a move from an ecumenical to an interfaith orientation. Through mutual respect we can create an inclusive community that is just\, caring and supportive.  World Community Day began in 1943 from discussions at meetings of denominational presidents and executive secretaries asking that a day be set aside for the study of peace by church women.  Although we come with different cultures\, family traditions and religious practices\, those differences provide gifts that we can share with one another.   Join us as we honor and rejoice in those differences that will unite us in new ways and courageously resolve to love all our neighbors as a way to peace.  Refreshments will be served in the church fellowship hall following the celebration. \nCHRISTMAS STOCKING PROJECT:   We will be preparing gift items for over 1\,125 nursing home residents.  We are asking for a $4.00 donation per resident.   Items included in the stockings are: pen\, notebook\, hand cream\, emery board\, tissues\, comb and a Christmas card.   We also prepare 50 gift bags for children who have mothers in the State Correctional Institute at Muncy.  All donations will be used for the Christmas Stocking Project. \nWORKDAY MONDAY:    Filling of the Christmas stockings will be on Monday\, November 18th at Pine Street United Methodist Church\, Williamsport at 9 am.   Thanks to everyone who will be working on this project.  (Parking permits will be available at the church.)

DESCRIPTION:Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service (LIRS) will be hosting an Entertaining Angels training at First Lutheran Church\, Mifflinburg\, on October 26\, 2019\, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  This is a new LIRS initiative to accompany people of faith as they hear a call to welcome and love their neighbor and extend hospitality to alien\, sojourner\, and stranger.  Lunch will be provided and registration is $15 per person.  This event is shaped by examining the biblical mandate for hospitality; our Lutheran heritage of hospitality; and social and cultural responses to migrants and refugees.  To register\, email brenda@uss-elca.org.

DESCRIPTION:As we approach the one-year anniversary of the Tree of Life shooting in Squirrel Hill\, the Pennsylvania Public Safety Agencies of Governor Wolf and the Anti-Defamation League will be hosting a Religious Security Summit on Thursday October 24\, 2019 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at 140 Main Capitol Room (House Majority Caucus Room)– Pennsylvania Capitol.  Currently\, representatives from the following agencies are being asked to attend and speak: \n\nAnti-Defamation League\nPennsylvania State Police\nPennsylvania Homeland Security\nFederal Bureau of Investigation\nSecret Service\nPennsylvania Postal Service\n\nThis program is designed to educate religious leaders about the acts of hate directed toward faith communities and related institutions in Pennsylvania and our nation\, and actions to protect congregations from acts of hate and violence.  This will be a free program for leaders of all faith traditions in South Central Pennsylvania.  After this event\, there is a plan to move this program to other regions of the state.  (This is the first such program).  Lutheran Advocacy Ministry in Pennsylvania invites you to RSVP to LAMPa@lutheranadvocacypa.org so they can assess the attendance and help organizers prepare.
