SUMMARY:Solidarity Not Solitary
DESCRIPTION:A program called “Solidarity Not Solitary” is scheduled for Sunday\, January 12\, 2020\, from 1:00-3:00 p.m. at St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Harrisburg. In this program\, important information on the use of solitary confinement will be shared.  The program will engage participants in experiential learning and have formerly incarcerated persons tell their stories about their personal experiences with spending time in solitary. The goal is to engage and mobilize faith communities to become advocates for reducing the use of solitary confinement in Pennsylvania—a practice that has been recognized as torture by the United Nations and by faith communities throughout our nation.  Click on this link to find the flyer: https://www.pachurchesadvocacy.org/event/solidarity-not-solitary-jan-12/.  The registration page is at https://www.pachurches.org/event/solidarity-not-solitary-january-12-harrisburg/. There is no charge to attend\, but they would like to have registrations so we know how many handouts to prepare and to gauge refreshments.

SUMMARY:Church Women United’s World Community Day
DESCRIPTION:Church Women United’s World Community Day service will be held Friday\, November 1\, 2019\, at Pine Street United Methodist Church\, 441 Pine Street\, Williamsport at 1:30 in the afternoon.  The theme is The Time is Now! “Resolve to Love.”  The scripture is Colossians 3:14. World Community Day 2019 focuses on global peace and justice.  As women of faith we have a responsibility to reach beyond Christian denominations to brothers and sisters who are Muslim\, Buddhist\, Jewish and many others.  It is a move from an ecumenical to an interfaith orientation. Through mutual respect we can create an inclusive community that is just\, caring and supportive.  World Community Day began in 1943 from discussions at meetings of denominational presidents and executive secretaries asking that a day be set aside for the study of peace by church women.  Although we come with different cultures\, family traditions and religious practices\, those differences provide gifts that we can share with one another.   Join us as we honor and rejoice in those differences that will unite us in new ways and courageously resolve to love all our neighbors as a way to peace.  Refreshments will be served in the church fellowship hall following the celebration. \nCHRISTMAS STOCKING PROJECT:   We will be preparing gift items for over 1\,125 nursing home residents.  We are asking for a $4.00 donation per resident.   Items included in the stockings are: pen\, notebook\, hand cream\, emery board\, tissues\, comb and a Christmas card.   We also prepare 50 gift bags for children who have mothers in the State Correctional Institute at Muncy.  All donations will be used for the Christmas Stocking Project. \nWORKDAY MONDAY:    Filling of the Christmas stockings will be on Monday\, November 18th at Pine Street United Methodist Church\, Williamsport at 9 am.   Thanks to everyone who will be working on this project.  (Parking permits will be available at the church.)

SUMMARY:“God’s work.  Our hand.” Day of Service
DESCRIPTION:Save the date! “God’s work. Our hands.” Sunday will be Sunday\, September 8\, 2019. This day is an opportunity to celebrate who we are as the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America – one church\, freed in Christ to serve and love our neighbor.  Service activities offer an opportunity for us to explore one of our most basic convictions as Lutherans: that all of life in Jesus Christ – every act of service\, in every daily calling\, in every corner of life – flows freely from a living\, daring confidence in God’s grace. \nYou work every day to make your community a better place. Let us continue doing this work together in 2018! Access resources to guide your congregation’s planning\, promotion and more at https://www.elca.org/dayofservice.

SUMMARY:Dandelion Trail Run at CML
DESCRIPTION:Camp Mount Luther will be holding a 5- and 10- kilometer trail run race at the camp on Saturday\, August 31\, 2019.  This is an entry-level trail race on Mount Luther grounds with proceeds going to the camp.  The start time for the race is 9:00 a.m.  Runners decide on race day if they want to do a 5k or 10K (a double loop of the 5K) run.  The 10k distance is included in the Rocksylvania 10k race series. More details on that are available at http://midpenntrailblazers.com/links.html.  Race day registration is $30. Pre-register by August 28 and pay only $25.  Registration opens at 7:30 a.m. on race day.  Spectators are welcome as well. A kid’s fun run will also be held with two age categories:  six and under and 7-10.  Special awards will be presented to every participant in the fun run.  Again this year\, a one-mile fun walk on a dirt road will be held with the same registration fees and amenities applying (or you may just walk without receiving amenities for $10).  Awards will be given for overall male and female race time\, three awards for each age group and an overall master’s for male and female in both the 5K and the 10K.  The awards ceremony will be immediately following the race.  Shower facilities are available after the race.  All miles for the course will be marked and there is one water stop on the course.  Timing will be electronically done.  To register\, visit http://midpenntrailblazers.com/trail-race-events/dandelion-run/dandelion-run.html.  The Dandelion Run\, begun in 2002\, is organized by Joel and Shelley Heasley of Middleburg. It was named in honor and memory of Rev. Glenn E. Heasley\, Jr.\, former Assistant to the Bishop of the Upper Susquehanna Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.  Glenn’s favorite “flower” was the dandelion.  Heasley’s widow\, Shirley\, is also involved in the planning of the race.
